Emotional hooks that stop the scroll (and why they work)
Seven hook archetypes, the emotion each one triggers, and how to adapt them to your brand without sounding like everyone else.
You are not competing with other marketers. You are competing with a friend's holiday photos, a football clip and a message notification. Under those conditions a hook has roughly half a second to earn the next line, and it earns it through emotion, not information.
The seven hooks that keep working
- ◆Confession — "I charged £4,000 for work that took me two hours and felt sick about it." Triggers curiosity through vulnerability.
- ◆Contradiction — "Posting every day is why your account stopped growing." Triggers a defensive re-read.
- ◆Cost — "That one line in your bio is costing you clients." Triggers loss aversion, the strongest lever in the list.
- ◆Callout — "If your captions start with 'excited to announce', this is for you." Triggers self-recognition.
- ◆Countdown — "Three things I'd fix before spending another pound on ads." Triggers completion instinct.
- ◆Contrast — "Same product. Same budget. One made £12k, one made £340." Triggers pattern-hunting.
- ◆Confidence — "You don't need more content. You need one message repeated properly." Triggers relief.
Why emotion beats information
Information competes on usefulness, which the reader can only judge after reading. Emotion competes on recognition, which is instant. That asymmetry is why a mediocre idea with an emotional entry point outperforms a brilliant idea introduced as a list of features.
How to make a hook sound like you
Take the archetype, then replace the generic noun with something only your customers would say. "Clients" becomes "the enquiry that ghosted you after the quote". Specificity is the difference between a template and a voice.
If drafting ten variations for every post sounds like a lot of work, that is exactly the job Aura AI takes over: ask it for ten hooks on any topic, pick the one that lands, and have it build the body copy underneath.
