AI marketing prompts that actually work (and why most don't)

'Write me an Instagram caption about our new product' is not a prompt, it is a shrug. The model has no audience, no voice, no offer detail and no goal, so it returns the safest sentence that fits — which is why so much AI marketing content reads identically.

The five things every marketing prompt needs

• ◆Audience — who this is for and what they already believe.
• ◆Tension — the specific frustration or desire the post touches.
• ◆Voice — the rules from your voice bible, or a link to it in the conversation.
• ◆Format — length, structure, and whether you want a hook, body and visual direction.
• ◆Goal — the single action the post should produce.

Prompts that produce usable output

• ◆"Interview me about my brand — ask one question at a time until you could write in my voice."
• ◆"Turn my answers into a voice branding bible: tone, cadence, vocabulary, banned phrases, three example posts."
• ◆"Using that bible, give me 14 days of content. Each day: emotional hook, 150–400 word body, visual direction, one ask."
• ◆"Rewrite day 6 — it sounds like a brochure. Make it a first-person story with a real consequence."

Prompts that waste your time

• ◆Anything asking for '10 engaging captions' with no context.
• ◆Anything that asks the model for statistics, case studies or testimonials — it will invent them.
• ◆Starting a fresh chat for every post, so the voice context is lost each time.

Always verify what comes back. AI makes mistakes, and the fastest way to lose trust with an audience is to publish a confident number that is not true.
